About this course
This course is essential for welfare rights advisers in Scotland who want to challenge decisions of the First-tier Tribunal effectively. The main aim of the course is to give you an understanding of what is an error of law, and practice in finding errors of law in the First-tier Tribunal statement of reasons. There is a new system of appeals in Scotland for adult disability payment and other benefits delivered by Social Security Scotland. The course will help you navigate the appeals procedures with an understanding of which rules are different or new for Scottish benefits.
The course covers:
- Ways of changing First-tier Tribunal decisions
- Procedures before and during an appeal
- Finding errors of law in the statement of reasons
- Drafting an application
- Hearings before the Upper Tribunal
Some experience of representing at the First-tier Tribunal is essential.
The course will be delivered online via Zoom from 10am to 1pm each day with a half hour break from 11.15 – 11.45.
It is a practical course, delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, exercises and group discussion. Participants will need a Wi-Fi connection and a suitable device to access the internet. It is not recommended to join via a mobile phone.
